It’s time to CARE.org

While I was walking through the Atlanta airport I saw a sign for CARE, an organization that seeks to give education and opportunity to women in impoverished places. Women make up half the world’s population, and when they are educated and empowered they become an economic force that hauls societies out of poverty. As I blogged recently about Maiti Nepal, I think it is important to help if you can. If this, or some other social organization speaks to you, please speak back! I have to do more research before I commit to helping this particular group, but I sure do like what I have seen so far. I hope you have empowered women folks in your lives. Make sure they know you love them!

CARE is an excellent organization and I have supported them in the past and done a ton of research on them. They are well rated on Charity Navigator and while they are not as good as groups like Save the Children, they do a lot of good work at an efficient rate.

Another organization is Global Partnerships. Microcredit in Latin America. A simple $100 loan to (mostly) women can absolutely transform lives for generations. The women build a business, repay the loan, advance their families and their home life, seek a larger loan, repay that, have a better business and send their eldest to university,…

Skyline – I heard about something similar to that… they were talking about it on NPR not long ago, but they were saying in this down economy that this format traps women (especially in places like Africa) and they end up losing everything they’ve spent years building… do you happen to know how those loans are handled?? I would love to do a simple $100 loan that helped someone’s family for generations, but I definitely don’t want it to become some kind of pit that hurts her in the long term. Can you say more please??? Thanks for the info!!

Ahhhhhhhhh see Devon my point in other blog postings makes sense. Did you not know about CARE before hand? You became aware of them so it pricked your thoughts on how to help. Part of your aim was to make people aware of Sean Cody. How could I not be made aware of the plight of women and education if someone had not raised it?
Also your point about doing more research before committing to a view or helping. It is the same with Sean Cody. I need to do more research and consider other views before going to the site or not going. There are always more points to consider before changing one’s views on something. Two sides of the story etc. If I had not had read your blog how was I to know about these issues?
Another point – you are going to find out if the loan will benefit the women and not trap them in the society and place. That is wise. How much money goes to admin costs to run the organisation? Best to check as best you can. Means more to do, but then again what maximises the positive journey of these women is best.
